James C. Shaw, 1890-1928, son of James H. & Annie
(Herbert) Shaw, and grandson of Hugh & Catherine (Brennan) Shaw and
Patrick & Ann (Houlihan) Herbert. The Shaws were originally from
Ireland, but James H. was born in England. The Herberts were from Co.
Westmeath, Ireland.
James C. and his brothers and sisters were orphaned in
1898, and were sent to live at St. Vincent's Orphan's Home in Fall River
for a few years. When he left the home, James moved to Boston and became a
patrolman for the Boston Police Department. After a few years he left that
position to become a railway mail carrier. In about 1923, he went into
business for himself, opening a variety store and news stand, called
"The Magazine Shop" near the corner of Pleasant St. and Eastern
Ave. in Fall River. He married Alice A. Lizotte, and had three children,
James B. who died as an infant, Alice and Florence.
