The Family of Hugh and Julia (O'Hara)
HERBERT First Generation 1. Hugh HERBERT was born in Ireland. He married Julia O'HARA, born in Ireland. Hugh was named in the death record of his son Patrick as Hugh, and in the death record of his son Michael as Hubert. Julia was named in the death record of her son Michael as Julia, and in the death record of her son Patrick as Julia O'Hara. Hugh
and Julia had the following children: +
2 F
i. Maria HERBERT was
born abt 1822. +
3 M ii.
Patrick HERBERT was born 7 Mar 1828/1830. He died 23 Aug 1893. +
4 M iii.
Michael HERBERT was born 1834. He died 26 Apr 1886.
Second Generation 2. Maria HERBERT (Hugh) was born abt. 1822
in co Westmeath, IRL.
Maria married James GERAGHTY 20 Nov 1840 in
the Roman Catholic parish of Moate and Mt Temple, co Westmeath, IRL. They
had the following children:
5 F
i. Catherine GERAGHTY
was christened 27 Sep 1842 in Moate/Mt Temple, co Westmeath, IRL.
6 M ii. Thomas GERAGHTY was christened 6 Dec 1846 in Moate/Mt Temple, co
Westmeath, IRL.
7 F iii. Maria GERAGHTY was christened 19 Jan 1852 in Moate/Mt Temple, co Westmeath, IRL.
3. Patrick HERBERT (Hugh)
was born between 1828 and 1830 in co Westmeath, IRL. He died 23 Aug 1893 in Fall
River, MA. Patrick married Ann HOULIHAN daughter of John and Mary
HOULIHAN probably in June 1844 in Mount Temple, Westmeath, IRE. Ann was born abt.
1824 in IRL. She died 30 Nov 1889 in Fall River. Patrick and Ann are buried in
St Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River, MA. The
oldest three children of Patrick and Ann had baptisms recorded in the parish of
Ballyloughloe, Mount Temple, co Westmeath, Ireland. Apparently their daughter
Mary and son Michael died before the family came to the US. On
6 June 1844, Patrick Herbert "de Caulry" received a Dispensation from
the Church at Moate/Mt. Temple. This would be so that he could marry Ann, likely
a non-Catholic. In the Griffith's
Valuation List, taken in 1852 in co Westmeath, Patrick appeared living in the
townland of Coola, in the parish of Kilbeggan in co. Westmeath. He leased a
house from Wm. Bernard Daley. His brother Michael was living nearby in the
townland of Meeniska also in the parish of Kilbeggan. Patrick
arrived in Boston from Ireland on 14 May 1870, on board the ship "SS
Tripoli" with his brother Michael and his daughter Margaret. He was
naturalized in the US Circuit Court at Boston, on 15 May 1874. His application
stated that he was born in Westmeath, Ireland on 7th day of March 1830. The
sponsors were Thomas Campbell and John McNulty. Patrick
and his family lived in Boston for about 3 years before moving to Fall River MA.
In June 1873 Patrick and Ann bought a house at 46 Mason St, and they lived there
until their deaths. Patrick's occupation was always listed as laborer. In 1891,
his daughter Annie and her husband and children lived in the house, and there
was also a Daniel McAndrew living there as a boarder. Patrick
and Ann had the following children:
8 F
i. Mary HERBERT was
born May 1845 in co Westmeath, IRL. She was christened 17 May 1845 in
Ballyloughloe, co Westmeath, IRL, sponsors named as Michael Ganly and Bridget
Balf. She probably died before the family came to the US.
9
M ii. Joseph HERBERT was born 18 Apr 1847 in co Westmeath, IRL. He was
christened 20 Apr 1847 in Ballyloughloe, co Westmeath, IRL, sponsors named as
John Deehan and Bridget Duigan. He died 2 Mar 1916 in Boston, MA. He was buried
3 Mar 1916 in Mt. Benedict Cemetery, W. Roxbury, MA.
Joseph
married Mary WHITE daughter of John and Mary WHITE 23 Jul 1875 in Fall
River, MA. Mary was born abt. 1857 in ENG, and died before 1900, probably in
Boston. He
kept a Family Bible in which many of the family births, marriages and deaths
were recorded.
The last entry was September 1891. Joseph and Mary had no children. He was named
as heir to his mother's estate in the deed to his father with other children 16
Dec 1889. He
was naturalized at the US Circuit Court at Boston on 15 May 1874, the dame day
as his father. The application stated that he was born in Westmeath, Ireland on
in March 1850, and his sponsors were Thomas Campbell and John McNulty. Soon
after their marriage, Joseph and Mary moved to Boston, and lived next door to
his sister Margaret and their uncle Michael on Mindoro St. in the Roxbury
section of the city. After his wife's death, he lived with his sister Margaret
in her home. His occupation was a laborer.
10 M iii. Michael HERBERT was
born 15 Mar 1849 in Ballyloughloe, co Westmeath, IRE. He was christened in
Ballyloughloe on that date, sponsors named as Thomas Holehan and Margaret
Holehan. He probably died before the family moved to the US. +
11 F iv. Catherine "Kate" Ann HERBERT was born Jul 1853. She died 6
Dec 1933. +
12 F v.
Margaret "Maggie" M. HERBERT was born Feb 1855. She died 21
Dec 1923. +
13 F vi. Maria A. HERBERT was born Aug 1858. She died 26 Feb 1933. + 14 F vii. Annie HERBERT was born abt 1861. She died 17 Sep 1894.
4. Michael
HERBERT (Hugh) was born abt. 1834 in co Westmeath, IRL. He died 26 Apr 1886
in Boston, MA. He was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale, MA. Michael
married Catharine HOULIHAN daughter of John and Mary HOULIHAN abt. 1850
in IRL. Catharine was born abt. 1835 in IRL. She died 5 Jan 1885 in Boston, MA.
They are buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale, MA, but there is no
headstone or marker. He
gave his year of birth as 1834 in his naturalization application. This is
consistent with the age he gave on the
ship registry of age 35 in 1870, although he reported on the 1880 census that he
was age 48. On
12 July 1850, Michael Herbert "de Caulry" received a Dispensation to
marry from the Church at Mt. Temple This may have been just before his marriage
to Catherine, and indicates that she was a non-Catholic. In Griffith's Valuation
List, taken in 1852 in co Westmeath, Michael was living in the townland of
Meeniska in the parish of Kilbeggan.
He leased a house and land of 2 rods 10 perches from Ellen Berry. His brother
Patrick was living at this time in the nearby townland of Coola. Michael,
age 35, with his brother Patrick and Patrick's daughter Margaret, arrived in the
port of Boston on board the ship "Tripoli" on 14 Mar 1870. His wife
Catherine and their four daughters arrived in Boston on the ship
"Siberia" on 30 May 1870; Maria age 15, Julia age 11, Kate age 8,
Sarah J. infant. Apparently the family must have been in England for at least a
short time, as Sarah's birth place is given as England in the records. On his
naturalization papers filed in US District Court, Massachusetts District, dated
9 Oct 1874, Michael Herbert of Boston, was born in co Westmeath, Ireland. The
witnesses were Thomas Deviney, his niece's husband and Joseph Herbert, his
nephew. Michael
Herbert and his family originally settled in Boston. They were living in Fall
River MA in 1874, not far from his brother Patrick, but apparently moved back to
Boston within a short time, where they lived at 24 Mindoro St. for several
years, until their deaths. BOSTON
