MacLAUGHLIN [Ft. Lauderdale FL, Sun-Sentinel, 20 February 1997] Edward "Ted" MacLaughlin, whose humor, courage and devotion to the sick was an inspiration to all who met him, has lost his fight against AIDS. Mr. MacLaughlin died in his sleep at his Fort Lauderdale home early on Tuesday just as he had wished. His mother, Anna, was nearby. He was 56. "He wanted to go to sleep peacefully in his own bed and not wake up. And that's what happened," Mrs. MacLaughlin said. "God was good." Born Sept. 3, 1940 in Providence, R.I., Mr. MacLaughlin graduated with an English degree from Providence College. He earned a master's degree in theater art for teaching at Emerson College in Boston. In 1981, he moved to Fort Lauderdale after a divorce. He taught English at Dillard High for 14 years until his illness forced him to retire in July 1995. A caring teacher, and a friend to those who suffered from AIDS, Mr. MacLaughlin also was a gifted writer. Just before Christmas 1995, he wrote a letter to the Sun-Sentinel in response to a request for readers' favorite Christmas memories. Mr. MacLaughlin wrote about Christmas 1947. His mother, then sick and short of money, traveled across the state of Rhode Island to find a pair of new cowboy boots for her then 7-year-old son. Now, Mr. MacLaughlin told of another journey his 81-year-old mother was making: To spend Christmas in Florida with her son, who was now too sick to travel to his family's home in Rhode Island. "Maybe," Mr. MacLaughlin joked, "I can find her some cowboy boots." Mr. MacLaughlin's letter about the love between a mother and son was so poignant, it resulted in a Lifestyle section story that was published on Christmas Day 1995. Much to his own surprise, Mr. MacLaughlin lived to celebrate one more Christmas. His mother returned to Fort Lauderdale in mid-December for a two-month stay. As he did a year earlier, he threw an open house. He called it his second annual "This Is My Last Christmas" party and never lost his good humor. But the past year had taken its toll. He was 10 pounds thinner. His energy had faded, and his voice sounded weary. Still, he devoted six days a week to The Poverello Center in Wilton Manors, which provides meals and helps those with AIDS. Mr. MacLaughlin was a fixture at the center's thrift shop, where he folded and priced clothes, six mornings a week. "Ted was here every day, even as sick as he was," said Tom Smith, a volunteer and board member. "He never missed a day." Often, Mr. MacLaughlin would bake lasagna or cheese and broccoli quiche at home and bring meals to other volunteers. This past Christmas, "he sat there and filled about 1,000 green jars of candy for our clients. He just pushed himself to the max," Smith said. "He had a lot of friends here. He's going to be very sorely missed." Mr. MacLaughlin continued to work at the thrift shop until about two weeks ago, when his health worsened. On Monday afternoon, he returned for a last visit. "He never lost his faith," his mother said. "He touched a lot of lives. He made a lot of people happy." In addition to his mother, Mr. MacLaughlin is survived by two daughters, Kristen L. of State College, Pa., and Amy K. of West Warwick, R.I.; a sister, Dorothy Glover of North Kingstown, R.I.; and a granddaughter. A memorial service and Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Henry Catholic Church, 1500 SW 12th Ave. in Pompano Beach.

RILEY [Pittsburgh PA, Post-Gazette, 1 March 1996] Richard A. Riley, former chairman, chief executive and president of Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., died Wednesday at the Manor Care Nursing Home in Akron, Ohio. He was 79. The cause of death  was a heart attack or a stroke, said his daughter, Janet Altenau of Hudson, Ohio.  Mr. Riley, who spent his entire career at Firestone, served in sales manufacturing and financial management positions in five Firestone divisions and held the presidency of four of them. He became a member of the board in 1970, and was named president of the Akron-based company two years later. He became chief executive and president in 1973, and chairman in 1980. He retired as chairman in 1981 but remained on the board until 1982. In 1975, Mr. Riley despaired for the free enterprise system in an article he wrote for Ward's Auto World magazine. Contending that "creativity and initiative" were being stifled by what he saw as a proliferation of government laws and regulations, he said it was time to "admit that the term 'free enterprise' is dead." "Realistically and regretfully, we must face the fact that the nation now operates under a 'controlled enterprise' system," he wrote, "and unless the headlong dash to regulate our individual and business lives comes to a halt soon, we will even have to eliminate the word 'enterprise.' " Mr. Riley was born in Fall River, Mass., and received a bachelor of arts degree from Providence College in Rhode Island in 1937. He joined Firestone as an accountant at its latex plant in Fall River in 1939.
