GEEHAN [Tuscon AZ, The Tucson Citizen, 27 November 1999] James Geehan -- Mr. Geehan, 76, died Wednesday. "He was a person of impeccable integrity," said Mark Kimble, associate editor of the Tucson Citizen. "Regardless of how the news affected the people he knew, he let the reporters write what they felt were legitimate news stories. He didn't let friends or acquaintances get in the way," said Kimble, who was a reporter and city editor during Geehan's tenure at the Citizen. "The news (business) was sacred for him," said daughter Barbara Geehan Wilson, who followed in her father's footsteps as a reporter and editor of several Gannett newspapers. Mr. Geehan's wife, Betty, said he was an "ardent worker" for newspapers, even after he retired in 1986. As a visiting "editor in residence" at the University of Arizona and at other universities, he mentored many young people interested in the news field, she said. Mr. Geehan began his career as a reporter for the Providence (R.I.) Journal-Bulletin. He worked there for 20 years, rising to state editor, managing editor and assistant general manager. In 1968, he joined the Gannett Co. as editor of the Plainfield (N.J.) Courier-News. A year later, he was named editor and publisher of the San Bernadino (Calif.) Sun-Telegram, now The Sun, where he worked for eight years. In 1977, Mr. Geehan took over the helm of the Citizen, succeeding William A. Small Jr., after Gannett bought the afternoon newspaper from Small's family. "He was an excellent newsman," said Kimble, who kept ties with Mr. Geehan after he retired in 1986 from Gannett News Service in Roslyn, Va., and moved back to Tucson with his wife. A lover of the outdoors, Mr. Geehan enjoyed camping, gardening and fishing in Arizona, his wife said. Mr. Geehan was born in Somerville, Mass., and graduated from Brown University with a degree in economics. Prior to working in newspapers, he served with the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. "Jim was always true to his family, profession, friends and himself. He lived life to the fullest and found a lot to laugh about along the way," his wife said. The Geehans - who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June - were dedicated travelers. The couple camped all over the United States and visited dozens of countries. Mr. Geehan was also active in the community, serving on several boards, including The Nature Conservancy, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, the Southern Arizona chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, St. Gregory College Preparatory School , the Foothills Forum and the Graduates Club. In addition to his wife, survivors include son James of Oakton, Va.; daughter Barbara Geehan Wilson and her husband Floyd of Alexandria, Va.; daughter Janet Geehan Hoffman and her husband Kenneth of Alamo, Calif.; grandchildren Andrew Hoffman and Casey Elizabeth Hoffman; and sister Jean Waldron of Massachusetts. LAWRENCE [Augusta GA, The Augusta Chronicle, Thur 16 March 1916] DEATH YESTERDAY OF MR. BRYAN LAWRENCE; Passed Away at 1:30 p.m. at University Hospital; FOR YEARS LEADING AND PROGRESSIVE AUGUSTAN. He Had Been a Sufferer From Illness for a Year - One of the Best Known and Most Highly Regarded Men in This Section. Mr. Bryan Lawrence, for a generation a prominent and progressive Augustan, for twelve months an invalid and a sufferer, died yesterday, at 1:30 o'clock at the University Hospital. Though his death has long been expected for there was no hope that he would recover from his illness - news that he had passed away will bring deep sorrow to hundreds of Augustans. When he was in health and strength, there was no finer Augustan and no better man. He was quick to respond when there was work to be done or a fund to be equipped for the advancement of Augusta. He was always in the lead in planning, equipping and executing plans to progress the city. Personally, he was a most companionable and lovable man. He was bighearted and generous and true to his friendships. He was a devout Catholic, and a leading member of St. Patrick's Church. For years in the hotel business, and a man who readily made acquaintances, he was well known through out the South Atlantic States. He has served in the city council and held leading places in the civic and political activities. He was a man of superior business ability. He was a good citizen in all that the word implies. Ill a Long Time. Mr. Lawrence had not been in good health for three or four years. A year ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and since then has been hovering between life and death. Friday new complications set in and he was subject to a surgical operation. His was an iron constitution, but his illness of a year had preyed on his physical strength. The end came yesterday. During his severe illness (on the 19th of August last) his beloved wife died. Because of his critical condition, information of that bereavement was not imparted to him. But, finally the absence of Mrs. Lawrence from his hospital bedside - for she spent the days with him and ministering to him - had to be explained to him in November. Mr. Lawrence is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mary Emma Walker, of Augusta; Mrs. C Bruce Young, of Augusta; Mrs. James P. Johnson, of Atlanta; Mrs. Frank Bussey of Atlanta; Mr. E. L. Lawrence and Mr. B. J. Lawrence, of Augusta. Came Here When Young Man. Mr. Lawrence, born in Woonsocket, R.I., was 62 years of age on March 5th. He came to Augusta when he was 18, and married an Augusta lady. In his young days he was in the butchering business and with his brother, the late Mr. Edward Lawrence, conducted the leading meat market in this section. Mr. Lawrence progressed rapidly. He became the hotel man of Augusta. Invested largely in real estate and became interested in a number of different businesses, besides conduction out-of-town hotel establishments. He was at one time owner of the Planters and for years the lessee of the Albien (sp). He was the Arlington lessee when that building burned. He owned a lot on Barrett Plaza when he became ill and, but for his sickness, would have built a hotel there. He owned valuable farming land near the city and was very successful in farming and dairying. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock from St. Patrick's Church and the interment will be in the City Cemetery. Active pallbearers: R. J. Baronewski, J. Frank Carswell, Charles H. Highly, Daniel Kerr, William M. Nixon, W. J. Cooney, E. J. Lyon, J. H. Milligan. Honorary pallbearers: C. C. Stulb, A.S. Hatch, Jacob Phinizy, T.J. O'Leary, W. E. Mobley [Researcher: Randolph Lines Starr, great-great grandson of Bryan Joseph Lawrence, Sr. April 2001 at the University of Georgia Library, Athens, GA. Contact [email protected]]
