St. Patrick's Cemetery, Douglas Avenue, Providence RI
On our first visit to this cemetery, we had thought that we would start out transcribing only those stones that had a place of origin in Ireland. By the time we went back for our second visit a couple months later, however, we realized that we needed to record all the stones, as this cemetery has never been recorded and the valuable information on the stones is not available anywhere else. Time, weather and vandalism have taken a heavy toll, and the inscriptions need to be preserved before they are completely lost. The task is a daunting one, for a couple of reasons. First, the cemetery is large in area, and contains many hundreds of gravestones, and a complete transcription will take many, many hours of work. The two of us have already spent about 7 hours each and we have managed to record less than a quarter of the gravestones. Secondly, the cemetery is in a rather unsavory neighborhood, limiting the days and times that it would be wise to go there (although we have not had any problem on either of our visits).
We have been thinking that if we could get a group of volunteers to go together to do the recording work, it would be a much safer and quicker process. We have no immediate plans for when this might be. But, if you live in or near Providence, and would be interested in participating in a group work party, please let either of us know, -Sue & Linda
