St. Mary's Cemetery, West Warwick RI
St. Mary's Cemetery in West Warwick is one of the oldest Catholic cemeteries in Rhode Island. It is quite large, and located behind and adjacent to St. Mary's Church, which was established in what was then the Arctic village section of Warwick in 1844 and was a predominantly Irish parish. Currently we have completed about two thirds of the oldest section of the cemetery, called Section OG. This is a transcription of all currently existing stones of Irish and likely-Irish burials that can be read. There are a very few non-Irish, mostly French, interspersed throughout this section. The cemetery is well-maintained, and most stones are still in good condition, although there are a few broken or fallen stones. The earliest recorded deaths we found were for deaths in 1819 and in 1846.
