St. Ann's Cemetery, Church St., Cranston RI
In 1893, James N. Arnold made a transcription (now located at the Rhode Island Historical Society library in Providence) of the few gravestones that were located in the small Catholic cemetery behind St. Ann's Catholic Church in Cranston, near the Cranston Print Works. Besides those gravestones that he copied, he stated that there were "Several other graves on lots in this cemetery not marked." The graves were primarily Irish burials with a very few French burials. After our visit to the cemetery, it appears that the small graveyard of Arnold's day now comprises Sections A through D of the large modern cemetery, and these sections now contain many additional graves and stones of Irish families. Comparing our own transcriptions with the ones that Arnold copied, it seems that in some instances families may have removed the old gravestones and replaced them with newer ones, and that stones were put on early graves at a later date. However, some of the information on the old stones was not reproduced on the new ones that replaced them. In these cases, we have made notes of the information that Arnold transcribed that is no longer included on the new stones. We have also indicated which other stones Arnold transcribed. We have begun with Sections A through E, by transcribing gravestones with a place of origin first, as well as some of the oldest burials that we found. We will continue to update this list as we make future visits to the cemetery. [JNA=James N. Arnold]
