John
William Cummings, 1855-1929, son of John and Mary (Rogers) Cummings, and
husband of Mary Catherine Cecelia Brennan. He was probably born in
Stockport, England. His parents were from Strokestown, co. Roscommon,
Ireland. The family first lived in Providence before moving to Fall River
permanently about 1873. Mr. Cummings was
a prominent lawyer in Fall River and served as Mayor of Fall River in 1885,
1887 and 1888. He actively served in many civic, professional and
fraternal organizations.
The
sketch above is from the Fall River Daily Globe of 5 March 1894,
accompanying an article regarding the celebration of the 114th anniversary
of the birthday of
the Irish patriot Robert Emmet. Mr. Cummings was the keynote speaker at
the festivities.
